Painted ‘Ikea’ Kitchen

Project details - Painted ‘Ikea’ Kitchen

Hand Painted ‘Ikea’ Kitchen, York

For this kitchen painting project I travelled to the lovely city of York. It took me a couple of weeks to transform this old and decidedly worn Ikea kitchen into the bright and modern kitchen you see in the pics.

There was virtually no varnish left on most of the doors and they were looking well past their best. The clients had inherited the kitchen when they moved in and were looking at their options; upgrade, upcycle or replace. They had found my info on the web, read my Blogs, seen my testimonials and were keen to talk over the hand painted option. After looking at some photos I assured them I could make it look fantastic and after an emailed estimate and discussion about logisitcs they got back in touch to say they wanted to commission me for the work 🙂

During the consultation we discussed all aspects of the project and looked in detail at colour options. In the end the colour chosen was the equivalent to Little Greene’s ‘ French Gray’, which I asked Holmans Paints in Swindon to mix for me in a specialist kitchen/furniture paint from Finland.

Various other works were undertaken before I started; including changing the worktops, decorating the room and having my joiner tweak and plane the doors/drawers and add some new doors to one of the cabinets. Over the years most of the doors had dropped or moved in some way and if they weren’t tweaked before the painting started the uneven gaps and fitting would be very obvious and spoil the overall look. As usual I called upon Colin Foggin to do this part of the project, Colin is an excellent joiner who regularly helps me out.

I also painted the insides of the cabinets on this particular project so by the end the clients had a truely bespoke and totally new looking kitchen. Breathing a new lease of life into this particular one was very satisfying as I personally love the look and design of ‘freestanding’ kitchens. At the start and towards the end of the project the clients actually went away on holiday, leaving me to complete the work whilst they were away – a great option, as coming back to a brand new kitchen without the faff just adds to the holiday joy. They were incredibly happy with the end result and were kind enough to send me this great testimonial –

‘Well, what a treat to come home to!  A kitchen completely transformed and looking fantastic!  It’s a great finish, and it all looks like it’s just been newly installed! We couldn’t be more pleased 🙂 🙂

Thank you so much Lee – it’s lovely.  And for something that was threatening major disruption, it was surprisingly easy to manage, thanks to you.  It was lovely to meet you and get to know you a little. We’ll certainly be singing your praises to friends and family! All the very best.’
