Project details - Hand Painted Shabby Chic Table

Hand Painted Shabby Chic Table

This hand painted shabby chic table was a great little furniture painting project for a client in Gargrave, Yorkshire. She had bought the table because of it’s shape and style, but was unhappy with the old paint finish. For such a delicate piece of furniture it wasn’t painted very sympathetically, looking much too dark and heavy. It would defiantly benefit from a more subtle ‘antiqued’ shabby chic effect and that’s the client contacted me to do.

Due to the detailed carving in the design, I actually decided to use aerosols rather than painting it by hand. Once the table was a solid colour, I mixed up a lovely French grey/green glaze to create part of the ‘aged’ shabby chic look. I stippled the glaze all over the table, then removed the excess with a cloth. This allowed some of the glaze to lay in the recessed areas and brought attention to all the lovely detailing. I then repeated the glazing process, but only to certain areas, making them a bit darker and bit more pronounced. Next, I lightly sanded the edges back to the original wood, adding to the shabby chic effect, and giving it a very lightly distressed look. I then dotted on a bit of The Little Greene Company’s ‘Ultra Blue’ to the four small circles at the top. ‘Ultra Blue’ is an amazingly beautiful colour and added a bit more detailing that complimented the colours in the wallpaper.

Although small, this console table was a lovely project to do as it involved a variety of different paint effects. Every piece of furniture I paint is totally unique and can be tailored to compliment the room and the client’s individual taste. Furniture that’s in good repair can be transformed with paint, and I am happy to offer advice on colours and finishes if you need help. I can even do the work in my workshop, arranging pick up and delivering to allow for a stress free makeover with the minimum of disruption.
