Hand Painted Kitchen Island

This hand painted kitchen island was commissioned by a couple who had bought an old lakeside house and were in the midst of completely renovating it. Their aim was to maintain as much of the original features as possible and design and decorate the new space in sympathy with the original building and its surroundings. There was a lot going on and much of it was bespoke work requiring a range of expert craftsmen.

They had recently installed a new bespoke kitchen and wanted to make the large central island into a real feature. The idea they had was to create an effect that complimented their old Chesterfield sofa that sat in the corner of the room. They wanted the island hand painted in a deep red and then aged with a specialist paint effect. Creating a look that’s aged but still contemporary is all about the balance, if the effect is applied too heavily then and it looks laboured, if it’s too light or sparse then it’s not a feature. I really enjoyed the hand painting this kitchen island, not only for the artistic challenge of the paint effect, but also because the house and views were simply spectacular. You don’t get to look out of that many kitchen windows onto a beautiful private lake and woodland!
