This most recent Smallbone kitchen that I painted was in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Beautifully hand-crafted in solid oak, the design and cabinetry were undeniably high quality, however the oak had begun to turn orange, and the look no longer aligned with the lighter, more contemporary aesthetic the client was moving towards.

Built using traditional joinery methods and designed to last for decades, these kitchens were originally conceived to be painted and repainted over time. That doesn’t mean the process is simple and choosing the right painter is extremely important.

Brushing also allows the paint to be pushed in to the grain, avoiding the patchy and dark look spraying can create.

Meticulous preparation is vital and on a kitchen like this, there are no shortcuts. The final topcoats were carefully applied by hand and roller, resulting in flawlessly smooth and durable surface. Painting by hand doesn’t have to leave visible brush marks, it’s all down to the individual skill of the painter.

The Transformation – The change to the room was dramatic. Where the oak once looked dark and dated, the new painted finish lifted the entire room. The kitchen now felt brighter, more open, and far more in tune with the rest of the home’s contemporary look.
